Beyoncé's Booty Barbarella

IMG_0301
From the 5 million or so edits in "Videophone," the Hype Williams-helmed music video event starring Beyoncé & Lady Gaga, it's easy to see why its much-hyped MTV debut was delayed. The fantastical scene with echoing triplet Beyoncés giving their best Booty Barbarella while twin Beyoncé mamas admire from behind--and sing the chorus, of course--was well worth the wait. Here, B. may be more gravity-challenged than Jane Fonda was starring in her 1968 sci-fi romp; but Ms. Sasha Fierce is certainly pop music's "five-star, double rated, astronavigatrix 'round the way girl," to adapt Barbarella's introduction in the film's trailer.
Ever since B. came out of her Destiny's Child shell and dropped onto a loading dock, shoulders a-shimmying, 29 seconds into the "Crazy in Love" video, she's worked to earn the "hell of a mover" praise that Fred Astaire gave Michael Jackson. (I wanted to throw something at the TV when she premiered her Josephine Baker-inspired dance routine on the BET Music Awards days before the video for "Deja Vu" first aired). The "Videophone" choreography may not be as detailed as that for "Single Ladies"; but Ms. Fierce certainly serves you body. It's not because she grabs her rack or pops the junk in her trunk oh so well. It's the look in her eyes, her stance. She's on a mission--not just the shawty she's serenading. "Videophone" is the 7th single from the (however remixed and repackaged) I Am...Sasha Fierce CD, the first 6 from which have all gone Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. To angle "Videophone" for that same perch, B.'s enlisted everyone's disco stick champion, Lady Gaga.

Gaga's not sporting Alexander McQueen in her cameo. She's not as nimble as Beyoncé's last dancing partner, Shakira. Still, the pistol-twirling Fame Monster is having tons of fun whipping that hair around in their chair dance à deux. Vocally, Gaga's an equally aggressive complement. Hearing Gaga and Beyoncé together here and on "Telephone," the infectious Rodney Jerkins-produced cut on Gaga's new release featuring an MC-worthy rant from B, makes me want to hear some of "Videophone"'s rolling bass behind those "Gaga oh la la" chants I can't get out of my head.

I know I'm going--and can't wait--to see Logan Hardcore's "Videophone" routine soon; but now, after watching the video a few hundred times, I also want to see Miss-ter T-Boy (pictured above) in a butt-length braided pony tail with Sherry Vine giving a parody-re-written cameo as Gaga. Maybe as a treat during Sherry's show at Barracuda? I'd even re-edit the track to clear some instrumental room for Sherry to work with. Here's hoping.
